AMD’s newest laptop CPU, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, promises cutting-edge performance, albeit for a single, upcoming ASUS ROG laptop.
AMD has added a new laptop CPU to its lineup, the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D, and it is the first mobile processor with 3D V-Cache. The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is said to be 15 percent faster than its predecessor, the 7945HX. Based on AMD’s Zen 4 architecture, this new processor is exclusive to the ASUS ROG Scar 17 X3D, and it is unclear at this point if there will be other laptop models with this processor.
Earlier this month, rumors about a new Zen 4-based Ryzen 7045 'Dragon Range' CPU started surfacing, suggesting a new high-end processor for laptops. Soon after, it was believed that a new Ryzen 7000HX3D laptop processor with stacked or 3D V-Cache technology was also in the works. V-Cache technology allows AMD to stack additional layers of cache on top of the CPU. This tech was first introduced with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D desktop processor in 2022, a processor that can still hold its own in late 2023.

AMD has unveiled its Ryzen 9 7945HX3D mobile processor that comes with 16 cores, 32 threads, a base clock speed of 2.3GHz, and a boost clock speed of 5.4GHz. It has 1MB of L1 cache, 16MB of L2, and 128MB of L3 cache. The processor operates within a TDP window of 55W to 75W and has a maximum operating temperature of 89 degrees Celsius. Notably, the Ryzen 9 7945HX has a 200MHz higher base clock speed, and the same TDP window, but can operate at a maximum temperature of 100 degrees Celsius. It also has half the amount of L3 cache compared to the newer Ryzen 9 7945HX3D with 3D V-Cache.
First mobile processor with 3D V-Cache
The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is an upcoming mobile processor from AMD that will be the first to feature 3D V-Cache in a laptop. The technology was introduced last year with a desktop processor, and it showed a significant performance boost over non-X3D chips. The 7945HX3D is no exception as it is 15% faster than the 7945HX, even though it has a 200MHz lower base clock speed. It packs 16 cores and 32 threads, 55W-75W TGP, 89 degree Celsius maximum operating temperature, and 128MH of L3 cache.
It should also be noted that this processor comes with Radeon 610M graphics instead of the newer Radeon 700M integrated GPU that is present in the Ryzen 7040 series of processors for laptops. The previous generation 7945HX also had the same Radeon 610M iGPU.
Interestingly, this new processor is exclusive to one single laptop from Asus, the ROG Scar 17 X3D. The laptop will be launched on August 22, equipped with an RTX 4090 laptop GPU with a 175W TGP. It will come with 32GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, which is not the fastest, but is complimented by a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. As the name suggests, it features a 17.3-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS display with 240Hz refresh rate and claims a response time of 3ms. All of this is backed by a 90WHr battery that can be charged via the 330W AC adapter, or at 100W using a USB Type-C cable.
The only laptop with Ryzen 7945HX3D CPU
The ROG Scar 17 X3D from Asus is an upcoming gaming and productivity laptop that features the first AMD mobile processor with 3D V-Cache, the Ryzen 9 7495HX3D. The laptop is also powered by an RTX 4090 mobile GPU that has a TGP of 175W. It comes with 32GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. It packs a 17.3-inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS display with 240Hz refresh rate and 3ms response time. The ROG Scar 17 X3D sports a 90WHr battery, and it supports 100W charging via USB Type-C, along with charging through its massive 330W AC adapter.
The announcements were made by AMD at ChinaJoy 2023 which was held from July 28 to July 31 in Shanghai. For now, there is only one mobile processor in the Ryzen 7045 'Dragon Range' CPU lineup and only one laptop powered by it. There is no information on the price of the Asus ROG Scar 17 X3D yet, but this is expected to be announced in the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile, there are several Ryzen-based gaming laptops currently available in the market that offer great performance in modern AAA titles.
