The Modern Laptop for Everyday Use: My Review of the MacBook Air 13.6”
When it comes to laptops, Apple’s MacBook Air is one of the most popular ultra-portable options on the market. As someone who values sleek design, reliable performance, and longevity in a laptop, the MacBook Air has long been high on my list. So when it was time for me to upgrade, I decided to take the plunge and pick up the latest 13.6” MacBook Air model. Here is my honest review after using it daily for the past few months.
The first thing that drew me to the MacBook Air is its compact yet beautiful design. At just 0.61 inches thin and 2.8 pounds, it is remarkably lightweight and portable. I’m able to easily slip the Air into my bag and work from anywhere without feeling weighed down. Yet even though it is svelte, every part of the Air’s unibody aluminum design feels sturdy and durable. It comes in several elegant colors like silver, space gray, and gold that always look sleek.
Despite its thin profile, Apple still managed to incorporate a good-sized 13.6-inch display. The widescreen LED-backlit display provides plenty of screen real estate for multitasking. Everything from documents to movies to spreadsheets looks brilliant on the Retina display, which has a resolution of 2560×1600. Whether I’m working on the couch or taking it to coffee shops, the anti-reflective screen makes everything easy to see even in sunlight.
While the MacBook Air is petite on the outside, it packs impressive internal specs for an ultra-portable laptop. The model I upgraded to has Apple’s sophisticated M1 chip, which provides insane levels of power and efficiency. I regularly have over 30 tabs open in Chrome, several Photos editing projects going at once, and stream HD video or play games simultaneously – all while still having plenty of resources left over. Battery life is also phenomenal, easily lasting me all day and sometimes two full days between charges even with heavy use.
Audio is an essential part of any laptop experience, whether it’s for video calls, streaming shows, listening to music, or gaming. And I have to say, I’m constantly impressed by the quality of sound from the MacBook Air’s integrated speakers. The speakers produce fuller, richer sound that gets loud without distortion. The three-mic array also ensures crystal clear audio quality for FaceTime calls and meetings, even in noisy environments. No more complaints about not being able to hear me!
For ports, the Air comes with just two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, which is minimal forsure. However, these versatile ports let me connect accessories, displays, docks and charge quickly using the same cable. While it took some adjusting to relying solely on dongles, I appreciate how this design decision allowed for an even more compact chassis. Wireless connectivity is excellent as well, with reliable and speedy WiFi 6 and Bluetooth performance. Cellular models also offer 5G connectivity for ultra-fast internet on the go.
macOS runs buttery smooth on the M1 processor. All my usual apps like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro and Xcode launched instantly. Battery life is also incredible – routinely getting over 15 hours of web browsing or video playback on a single charge. Even after months of usage, it maintains this strong battery performance. Standby time is excellent too, keeping apps and dozens of tabs suspended for days without draining the battery.
Priced starting at $999, the MacBook Air delivers fantastic value for a laptop of this quality and caliber. Especially now that the new M2 models are out, you can find even better discounts on the M1 version. Factor in the excellent build, stunning display, powerful performance that’ll last you for years, and the eco-friendly design – and it’s clear that the MacBook Air is a long-term investment. This has become my go-to laptop for everything from work to entertainment and definitely one I’d recommend.
